Individual Counseling
Counseling with someone who sees the whole picture
Dr. Colt earned a PhD in clinical psychology in 2013 and an MD in family medicine after that, which is an unusual pairing. It means the person sitting with you through a hard season is also the person who understands your thyroid labs, your medications, and the quiet way a chronic illness can reshape a mood.
Sessions are person centered and trauma informed. You set the pace. Nothing gets pushed, and nothing about your history, your identity, or your relationships needs to be explained or justified before we can get to work.
What we work on together
Anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, chronic illness and pain, life transitions, family and relationship stress, identity, and the long tail of trauma. Some people come in with one specific thing. Others come in because something is off and they want room to figure out what.
Riverside Family Medicine is an affirming practice for LGBTQIA2S+ patients. Dr. Colt is double fellowship trained in LGBT healthcare and has spent his career in sexual and gender health, so you will not spend your first three sessions educating your clinician.
Counseling happens in person in Oneonta or by secure telehealth, and it connects directly to the rest of your care. If medication is worth discussing, that conversation can happen in the same room.

One on one counseling that is trauma informed, affirming, and connected to the rest of your health care.

Do I have to be a member to get counseling?
Counseling is included for Direct Primary Care members in New York. Non members can also be seen on a per service basis, and telehealth counseling is available to patients located in New York, Texas, or Minnesota. Contact us and we will walk through the options.
Is this practice affirming for LGBTQIA2S+ patients?
Yes. Dr. Colt is double fellowship trained in LGBT healthcare and has taught and published in sexual and gender health for over a decade. Pronouns, chosen names, and relationship structures are respected without commentary.
Can I get therapy and medication in the same place?
Yes, and it is one of the real advantages here. Dr. Colt is both a psychologist and a physician, so counseling and psychiatric medication management can be handled together instead of split between two providers who never speak.
How long are sessions?
Longer than you are probably used to. Visits at Riverside Family Medicine run from 30 to 120 minutes depending on what you are bringing in that day.
